Retaining walls are an integral part of many landscapes. So, why build a wall? Most walls are built for slope management and drainage control. Many homes require a retaining wall around the foundation to create a level planting surface. But walls can also be built for aesthetic purposes. An island or berm can be a wonderful perennial garden and add great value to the landscape.
There are a number of factors when choosing what kind of material to build your retaining walls out of. Aesthetics is the first consideration. It is very important to match the material with the house. Each homeowner has a different opinion of what they want. That is probably the most important consideration, the customer must feel comfortable with the material selection. Other considerations are cost and how long the wall will last.
Retaining walls are the one aspect of landscaping that truly serves a purpose. Most walls are constructed to retain some form of a slope or structure. Walls are usually installed to provide a larger "usable land" area. In the past natural fieldstones, railroad ties and solid concrete walls were the only choices available to landscape contractors. Recently, concrete modular retaining wall systems have revolutionized the industry.
